Fourteen unpaid carers from across East Lothian were treated to a thrilling and heartfelt day out at Foxlake Adventures, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and the ongoing success of the Respitality initiative, now celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Organised by Carers of East Lothian, the event was part of Carers Week 2025 activity, and a tribute to a decade of Respitality – a social tourism movement that connects unpaid carers with donated short breaks from the hospitality, leisure, and tourism sectors.

Of those that attended, 100% of unpaid carers reported an improvement in their mental wellbeing as a result of the event.

The day featured adrenaline-inducing fun on the Foxfall ropes course; a ride on the Ringo; and a relaxing wind-down with tea, coffee, and cake provided by Jay Bird’s Larder. This marks the second consecutive year that Foxlake Adventures has supported unpaid carers in East Lothian through Respitality.

Amy McKinnon, Respitality Coordinator with Shared Care Scotland commented: “Thanks to Carers of East Lothian for inviting us along to celebrate Respitality’s 10th birthday. It was lovely to meet both carers and some of those donors who offer much-valued and adventure-filled breaks. It was such a joyful event!”

Unpaid carers often face emotional, physical, and financial challenges that make taking a break nearly impossible. Respitality offers a lifeline—providing carers with time to recharge, reconnect, and feel valued. Events like this not only boost wellbeing, but also foster community and connection.

Respitality thrives on the kindness of businesses like Foxlake Adventures and Jay Bird’s Larder. By donating experiences, meals or stays, businesses can play a powerful role in Scotland’s growing social tourism movement—making a real difference in the lives of those who give so much to others.
