Amina's story

Amina* cares for their daughter, who is profoundly deaf, while also supporting the wider needs of their family. Like many unpaid carers, opportunities for a family break are limited, making time away together difficult to achieve. Amina provided feedback to the Respitality team through our online feedback form on her Respitality break experience.

Amina and her family enjoyed a Respitality break at Roots at the Beeches in July 2026, thanks to the support of the Glasgow City Carers Partnership team. The break provided an opportunity for the carer and their family to spend quality time together, experience the countryside, and enjoy a change of scenery away from the demands of everyday life.

The family stayed in accommodation that was described as “welcoming, spacious and fully equipped”, with thoughtful touches that helped them feel at home from the moment they arrived. The hosts, William and Shiona, went above and beyond to support the family during their stay, introducing the children to the animals on site, providing outdoor games, and helping them explore the local area.

The family also explored the local area - visiting Irvine Beach, Dean Castle Country Park and Eglinton Visitor Centre, creating new experiences and memories together.

Reflecting on the break, the carer described the experience as "peaceful", "refreshing" and "scenic", highlighting the opportunity to recharge in calm surroundings and spend time in nature. They particularly valued being able to enjoy the countryside and watch their children engage in activities together.

The impact of the break extended beyond simply having time away. The carer reported feeling better able to have a life alongside their caring role, more physically, mentally and emotionally well, and recognised and valued as an unpaid carer. The opportunity also allowed the family to spend uninterrupted time together and create positive shared memories.

The carer was keen to acknowledge the support they received in accessing the break, saying that their support worker, Ifshan, was "very helpful, supportive, and encouraging throughout the process" and that without this encouragement they may not have taken up the opportunity.
